History of NBA Jam

Midway’s NBA Jam series started in 1993 with the release of the original NBA Jam in arcades. This was one of the first officially licensed NBA video games. The realistic art style, player design and animated crowds coupled with the over-the-top physics and extreme 2-on-2 gameplay set a new standard for sports games and made it an instant hit. It has since been ported to the Super NES, Sega Master System, Nintendo Game Boy, Sega Game Gear and Sega CD, making it particularly nostalgic for those that were Australian gamers in the 1990s. Of course, while certainly impressive for the time, these home versions of NBA Jam were nowhere near as good as the original arcade classic.

History of NBA Jam Tournament Edition

The 1994 sequel NBA Jam: T.E. includes new features and updated rosters. Teams are now of 3-5 players but continue to have only two on the court at a time. This allows for more varied team lineups and players can now be substituted between quarters if a character is becoming fatigued. More gameplay features such as the Tournament mode, on-court hotspots, updated team rosters based on the 1994 NBA season and updated music. This was originally ported to the Super NES, Sega Megadrive, Game Boy, Game Gear, Sega Saturn, Sega 32X, Sony Playstation and Atari Jaguar, making this potentially the widest-reaching version of the game.

History of NBA Hangtime

In 1996, Acclaim, who published the home console versions of the two original NBA Jam games mentioned above, gained the rights to publish new games under the NBA Jam name. This led to the third game in the Midway-released arcade series, NBA Hangtime. NBA Hangtime plays similarly to the previous games, with the most notable addition being its “Create Player” feature. This updated feature allows you to customise the stats of your player, as well as upgrading him as you earn more attribute points from winning games.
